What Is The Difference Between GSM Tester & Quadrant Scale?

Both grammage tester and quadrant scale are significantly used in the paper industry for similar purposes, which is why many of us confuse their functionality. However, the purpose of using these testers is not exactly the same. They are used for measuring different aspects of the quality of the paper. In simple words, the GSM tester is used to measure the basis weight of the paper, while the scale measures the thickness or calliper of the paper.  There are other differences, too, between the two measuring equipment. We will throw light on these differences in the following section. So, keep reading.  What is a Grammage Tester? A grammage tester is an intelligently designed instrument that measures the basis weight or weight per unit area of the paper. In simple words, when a specific area of paper sample, prepared using a square paper cutter is tested on the GSM tester, it determines the weight or the density of the sample.  The basis weight is expressed in te...

What Is GSM? How Quadrant Scales Are Significant In GSM Testing?

GSM stands for Grams per square metre is a crucial unit to measure the weight of the paper. It represents the weight of 1 square metre of paper in grams. In both the paper and packaging industries, the role of GSM is undeniable. A sample cutter is used to prepare the specimen, which is then tested on a GSM tester to find the basis weight. The GSM of a paper depends on several things. The most common are: The type of fibre Fibrillation process The length of the fibre Fillers, pigments, as well as coatings on the paper.  Calliper or thickness (the thicker the paper, the higher the GSM) The process of drying and pressing the paper. Moisture content in the paper Consistency  Calendering of the paper,  The application for which the paper is made When it comes to calculating the GSM of the paper, a quadrant scale does not play a direct role. In other words, one cannot measure the GSM directly on the quadrant scale. It is, in fact, measured on the GSM testing machine, by prepa...
