GRE General and GRE subject tests: Some important things you should know!

The Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) is a standardised test widely used in the admissions process for graduate programs in the United States, Canada, and some other countries. It's administered by the Educational Testing Service (ETS). The GRE is typically a computer-based exam that assesses:

  • Analytical Writing: Includes two essay prompts, assessing writing ability.

  • Verbal Reasoning: Tests vocabulary, reading comprehension, and reasoning skills.

  • Quantitative Reasoning: Evaluates mathematical concepts, problem-solving, and data analysis.

If you check the GRE syllabus and exam pattern, you will understand that the purpose of this test is to evaluate a candidate's aptitude for graduate studies, particularly in areas like critical thinking, problem-solving, and analytical skills.

Along with the GRE General, there are also GRE subject tests that are optional tests that assess knowledge in a specific academic field, such as Mathematics, Physics, or Psychology.

In India, the GRE exam fee is ₹22,000 for the General Test and ₹14,500 for the Subject Test. If you are preparing for the GRE exam, then you must have checked the GRE eligibility. There are no specific eligibility requirements; anyone can register and take the test.

Although there is no age limit or educational qualification, most test takers have a bachelor's degree, as the GRE is typically used for admission to a graduate program.

The GRE exam dates are available online on the available website, and the GRE Subject Tests are administered normally in September, October, and April. Check the exact dates on the website itself. Now, after checking dates, it is time to check the preparation. You can use GRE sample papers or mock tests to check your readiness.

So, prepare well, take the test, and do well in it to get a good score. A GRE exam score is needed to get admission to a foreign university for a graduate program. So, start your preparation from today!
